A new program looking to uplift and support single mothers in their goals and aspirations is coming to Shepparton in July.

The Bloom Careers, Work and Wellbeing guidance program for single mothers is run under the guidance of the Council of Single Mothers and their Children.

It aims to build confidence in single mothers, helping them with their work or study goals while in a safe and supported environment.

Leading the campaign is Erika Williams, an experienced industry professional and single mother, who has been helping mothers reach their goals for many years.

After the recent successful launch of Bloom in the City of Wyndham, which covers the outer south-west suburbs of Melbourne, Ms Williams was ready to bring the program to regional Australia.

“We’ve always been aware there’s a high number of single mothers in Shepparton,” Ms Williams said.

“Everybody has different circumstances, so I work with each participant, helping them with their own individualised tailored program.”

Ms Williams recognises that it’s a difficult road for many, and having a program available such as this one, alongside government support, makes all the difference.

“The recent changes in the Parenting Payment for single parents and the axing of the Parents Next program has validated the role of a mother that she is working even when she’s not working outside the home,” Ms Williams said.

“Raising a family on your own is hard work.”

The federal budget in early May saw the axing of the Parents Next Program, which imposed heavy requirements for parents to fulfil in order to get support.

It also saw the increase of the maximum rate and age eligibility for the Parenting Payment for single parents from eight years to 14.

In the Bloom program, participants will undertake individual coaching sessions online and network together once a month in Shepparton with guest speakers and activities.

“The service is free, informal and supportive,” Ms Williams said.

“If you’re looking for a fresh start, want to change careers or just want to find out what you might like to explore as a single mum, this program is for you.”

The program starts on July 10 and bookings are limited, so to find out more information or secure a spot in the program, call Erika Williams on 0423 189 340 or email her on bloom@csmc.org.au
