A day for sharing culture, Njernda Aboriginal Corporation has encouraged communities to come together for a corroboree at Echuca Rotary Park on Friday, September 30.
Njernda family services Aboriginal family-led decision-making project worker Brody Atkinson said the Yaka Yakapna Corroboree is an opportunity for Mob to get together and reconnect.
“With COVID-19 upending everyone’s lives, it’s been a long time since the community has been able to get together,” Mr Atkinson said.
We wanted to put on an event that everyone could come along to and get involved with as we know many people have felt isolated, and it’s really important to be active in the community and keep that social aspect of our lives.
“Mingling and socialising with others helps to restore that sense of belonging and connection in all of our lives.”
The corroboree will feature a host of stalls, food and fun for all ages, with all Echuca Moama community members welcome to attend.
Mr Atkinson said Njernda has a really special day planned, with heaps for everyone to do and see.
“We’ve organised traditional dancing, live performances by some local community members, a DJ, stalls, jumping castle, camel and pony rides,” he said.
“There’ll be a weaving station for the kids, necklace making and a native animal show, as well as a barbecue lunch and some more traditional foods like kangaroo and chicken stew.
“It’s an opportunity to meet and greet with professionals too. Many Njernda staff members across different areas of the organisation will be there offering information and the chance to find out more about our programs.”
The Yaka Yakapna Corroboree will be held on Friday, September 30, at the Rotary Park in Echuca from 10am to 3pm.
