Not slim; definitely shady

Something shady’s going on at Greater Shepparton Secondary College.

But, don’t be fooled; the cover-up will be welcomed by the school community.

Works began on new shade structures for two areas of the school during the winter break, with the foundations laid for a hefty structure the height of the school’s gymnasium over the northern basketball courts.

It will provide a large amount of shade for students at recess and lunch times in an area that the school’s director of operations systems, Evan Pyle, said would eventually also have seating constructed to make it a real multi-purpose space.

Three more smaller structures will be put up in the school’s courtyard area to complement the young trees as they grow in the space to provide further shade for students and staff, with a cantilever structure also being installed to cover the stage in the same area.

The project is funded by GSSC.

Construction company Greenline is building the structure off-site and installing it at the school, overseen by the Victorian School Building Authority.

Mr Pyle said the project was on schedule to be finished during the next break between terms — providing nothing, such as severe storm activity, slowed the works.

When school starts back in Term 4, around the same time UV rays get stronger, there’ll be plenty of shade to escape to in the grounds.

“Everyone’s really excited about it; students and teachers,” Mr Pyle said.
