Nurture your child’s creativity and love of art with the Benalla Art Gallery’s School Holiday Workshop program.

The program commences on Friday, January 13, with several different workshops held for varying ability levels and ages until January 20.

The program commences with a Clay Creations workshop on Friday, January 13 in the Pat Gardner Studio from 10.30am to noon, where children will create mobiles using air-dry clay.

In this workshop, children will learn how to shape, mould and imprint on clay; and explore pattern, line, shape and form.

They can then paint their pieces at home to continue the holiday fun. This workshop is suitable for children aged five to 15, with children under nine accompanied by a carer to assist.

This workshop costs $20 for gallery members and $25 for non-members.

Then on Monday, January 16 the National Gallery of Victoria Kids on Tour returns with Let’s Make Art!

This is a free program of art activities for children and families held in the Pat Gardner Studio from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

This workshop is an opportunity for children to learn about art and significant artists throughout history using a range of hands-on activities.

The workshop will feature collage, building and portraiture, and promises to be lots of fun.

It is suitable for children aged five to 15, with children under nine accompanied by a carer to assist.

Also on Monday, January 16 is NGV Teens Character Design, a free workshop suitable for teenagers aged 12 to 18.

It will be held from 1.30pm to 3.30pm in the Pat Gardner Studio.

This workshop is specifically designed for budding teen artists, providing instruction on character design illustration inspired by artist Rubii Red, a proud Lama Lama woman from Cape York, Queensland.

Anime and comic books are a strong influence on her work, which includes character design.

Teens will be guided by gallery staff to use the NGV activity to discover Rubii Red’s techniques and design their own characters.

On Thursday, January 19 from 1pm to 3pm, the gallery presents Indigenous Weaving is Women’s Business, a workshop for ‘girls only’ and those identifying as female, aged 10 to 15 years.

Local elder and artist Aunty Desiree Walker will show participants First Nations weaving techniques to create a woven artwork.

This workshop costs $20 for gallery members and for $25 non-members

The final workshop, on Friday, January 20, is Garden Sketch held from 10.30am to 12.30pm in Benalla’s iconic Botanic Gardens.

Children will take a tour of the gardens and learn about some of the plants that line its paths, before settling into a cosy spot in the shade to sketch a garden scene.

Children aged eight to 15 years will take time to do close-up flower sketches, technique exercises and talk about the key elements of sketching landscapes.

Children under nine must be accompanied by a carer to assist.

This workshop costs $10 for gallery members and $15 for non-members
