One person has died in a crash just south of Yarroweyah, near Cobram, just kilometres from the site of the state’s deadliest road accident last month.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said it was believed a car travelling north along Benalla-Tocumwal Rd and a truck driving south collided just after 5pm on Thursday, May 4.
The driver of the car, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
A spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria said one person had been taken to Goulburn Valley Health with upper body injuries and was in a stable condition.
The crash happened only a few kilometres from the site of a “catastrophic” quintuple fatality on April 20, which occurred just outside Strathmerton.
An alert was issued for people in the area to be alert for hazardous materials “following a road accident”, but there was no threat to the community.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
The recent crash has hit the Moira Shire community hard with the independent administrator John Tanner extending council’s condolences to the victim’s loved ones.
“This is further shocking news for our community, considering the fatal collision only weeks ago in Strathmerton,” he said.
“One death on our roads is too many, six in a month is a further tragedy.
John Tanner and members of the Moira Shire executive committee have continued to call for motorists to drive with caution on the local roads.
“I appeal to all motorists, from those who have just got their licence to experienced drivers, to be vigilant when driving and to keep safety top-of-mind,” Mr Tanner said.
Moira Shire Council’s acting chief executive officer, Joshua Lewis said that council is continuing to work with Victorian Police and the Department of Transport and Planning to improve the shire’s road networks.
“We want all motorists to feel safe on our roads. This work is a top priority for us,” he said.
“I urge all residents to always take caution when travelling throughout the municipality,” he said.
Mr. Lewis said that council would be making available a range of counselling services to assist all those involved in the latest collision.
The latest crash brings the state’s road toll for 2023 to 112 lives lost, compared to 84 lives lost by the same time last year.
