Our netballers make history

Finley High School's open netball team will now compete at the state championships.

Finley High School students excel in many ways, and none more so than the open girls’ netball team which has recently made history by taking out top place in their pool at the recent Riverina Netball Carnival.

In doing so, the team has earned a place at the State Championships in Wollongong in August.

The team showcased extraordinary skill and teamwork to go through the day undefeated against some tough competition from around the region including Albury, Narrandera, Kooringal, Tumbarumba, Leeton, Billabong High and Griffith.

The team consisted of Jasmine Burke, Sienna Burke, Olivia Campbell, Chelsea Winn, Daisy Daniel, Josie Coombs, Erica Nicolls, Stevie Bateman, Sarah Bauer and Paige Gray.

Special thanks to the parents who transported the team to Wagga and a special thanks to Sasha Wood who went along to umpire for the day.

Fr Paul Lu (sixth from left) and Fr Fredrik Le Measurier (seventh from left) at the opening of the columbarium with Lions (from left) Ron Beattie, president Ian Taig, Peter Braybon, Nellie Johnson, Gavin Butcher, John O’Rourke and Greg Brunt.

A small but respectful crowd gathered at the Finley cemetery last Saturday for the official opening and blessing of the new columbarium, constructed under the guidance of the Finley Lions Club.

This is a great addition to the facilities and just one more project carried out by the organisation.

Maintenance at the cemetery is also done by the members and it is a credit to their dedication.

Catholic Priest Fr Paul Lu and Anglican Priest Fr Fredrik Le Measurier, together with Lions president Ian Taig, conducted the ceremony.

It brought to a conclusion a project which has taken two years to come to fruition.

It was suggested that the next project for the members could be a board at the entrance to the cemetery containing a map with burial details.

Each year at Finley High School, careers advisor Deb White and principal Jeff Ward meet with Year 12 students to discuss their transition from high school.

This year they are extremely impressed with the students and the work they have already put into preparing for a future beyond high school.

Teachers were able to give some direction, along with alternatives and scholarship opportunities available to the students.

From the 43 students interviewed, 25 indicated they plan to attend university, 13 students plan to start a trade or continue or start a traineeship, three students plan to enter the police or defence force and two students plan to go into the family business.

The most popular degree was teaching with six, followed by nursing with four.

Mr Ward took the opportunity to have a photo with those students who are choosing a teaching career, and wished them all the best as they look to begin their educational journey.
