Paul Newman to step down as Kyabram coach at end of Goulburn Valley League finals series

Newman, a multiple premiership-winning coach at the Bombers, has been in the role since the end of the 2021 season, after having two years off following the 2019 grand final win.

The champion goal-kicker had an extraordinary four-year run as coach of the club when the Bombers lost just one game and secured three premierships.

He also created headlines throughout last summer when he returned to play cricket with Kyabram Fire Brigade and also played in the Hurley Hounds GV Bush Bash-winning team.

The club and league great said it was time for a fresh voice and spending more time with his family and watching the kids begin their sporting careers was the main reason to pass the baton on.

“I spoke to the guys during the week and I just said I want the focus to be on them,” Newman said following the win over Euroa.

“I’m not dying or anything or going anywhere, I’ll still be around, it will just be a new person at the helm and that’s an exciting time for the club.

“A new era and a new instruction, a new voice and the players will look forward to that, I’m sure. Hopefully (we can finish on a high), that’s the plan.”

Newman’s Bombers brushed aside Euroa in the penultimate round of the season on Saturday.

Kyabram will finish the campaign in third spot and will either play Mansfield or face Euroa again in the first week of finals.
