Philip Ross-Soden has been named as Moira Shire’s Star Achiever of the Year for 2023, being described as someone who has made Strathmerton the town it is today.

Mr Ross-Soden is a community man through and through and received the award in front of family, friends and community members at the inaugural Moira Shire Awards ceremony held on Thursday, April 20.

Volunteering is in his blood, with Mr Ross-Soden’s parents always taking the time out to volunteer locally.

Mr Ross-Soden has volunteered for more than 45 years with many community organisations, including Nurmurkah’s football and netball club, tennis club, hall and recreation reserve committees and on the steering and progress committee.

He is also a veteran of the fire brigade having served for more than 45 years including being captain.

Mr Ross-Soden has in the past been the recipient of awards for service to the community, including the the Citizen of the Year award for the Moira Shire in 2009 as well as a recipient of a Strathmerton Community life service award.

Talking after the ceremony Mr Ross-Soden said he was overwhelmed by the award and that it was completely unexpected.

“Completely shocked. I didn't think I'd win,” he said.

The Star Achiever of the Year is awarded to someone who has demonstrated excellence in the community, made significant contributions in various categories and is able to represent the shire.
