Sandra Gagliardi was the star of the grade five girls age group at the regional athletics championships. She won six individual awards, continuing a three-year stint where she was the most outstanding athlete in her age level.

1976

Valley View had its second largest field ever on Sunday, organisers Graeme and Jean Kelso, Pam and Doug McAuliffe and Nance Cornish the celebrated figures behind the turn out.

Neil Royce and Alan Thorson won the members’ event, finishing on 11-up, with Derek Anderson and Geoff Maxwell runners-up.

Peg Crow and Irene Robertson won the associates’ event, while the pairings of Beryl Gemmill-Gwen Brewster and Ivy Buzze-Fay Gibbs were runners-up.

Other winning golfers at the event were Alan Knight with 75-15-60, while Charlie Olle and Syd Smith were other winners.

· Stanhope opening batters Murray Barrett and Peter Thomson dominated the first day’s play of round three in Kyabram junior cricket, amassing a 211-run stand.

Thompson hit 13 boundaries on his way to 118, while skipper Barrett played a secondary role, but finished with 87 not out. The runs came in just 120 minutes of competition.

Other stars of the round were Girgarre’s Greg Halls, who took 5-7 and was 30 not out at stumps. Brian Kilmartin scored 28.

Rushworth beat Tongala with Paul Gleeson taking 5-8 and Damien Crute 5-17, Tongala all out for 27.

Tongala’s John Wallis scored an unbeaten 128 as Tongala amassed a huge total of 5-259 against Tatura, he had big partnerships with Steven Graham and Geoff Vick.

Other stars from the senior round of games were Chris Hunter, Stewart Steendgam and Lackie Ranson.

Lancaster skipper Vin Sleeth and Ron Cunningham were the major contributors to their team’s score.

1986

Squash champions for 1986 are, from left, Wayne Leppard, Peter Kemp, Jason Moon, Sharon Moore and Jack Jasiuczenia.

Wayne Leppard won his ninth Kyabram Squash Club championship, taking the title from Roger Gilbert, who defeated Adrian Brown to reach the final.

Leppard won in straight sets, while the women’s title was woni by Sharon Moore, who beat Sherri Newth in another straight sets final. Peter Kemp and Dean Hubble played off for the junior championship, with Kemp finally winning in five sets.

Jack Jasiuczenia won the B-grade title from David Wilkinson, while Jason Moon won C-grade with a win against Neil Hall.

· Footscray Football Club captain Rick Kennedy was the special guest of Kyabram Sports and Leisure Centre for the official opening — the centre featuring a gym, sauna, spa, heated swimming pool, childminding centre and sports store.

The owner-operator of the business, Wayne “Doc” Thomas and his wife Karyn, were thrilled with the turnout for the event.

· Tongala Football Club was facing a $17,000 deficit to start the 1987 season, a new president and secretary installed to tackle the debt.

Leo Davis was appointed president and John Bentley secretary, with six new life members also announced at the meeting — Mick Souter, Daryl Reid, Doug Cox, John McGregor and Graeme Murphy.

Another life membership was awarded to Bob Souter for all his efforts on behalf of the club through the years.

· A Kyabram syndicate known as the Mongrels collected about $500 each when At Talaq won the Melbourne Cup.

They paid $800 for the horse at the Kyabram Club calcutta, with first prize $6120. Second price was won by Charlie Waite and Norm Turpin after they purchased Rising Fear for $130 and won $2225.

The total pool for the calcutta was $11,125.

Lisa Jane was the 1996 Goulburn Valley Golf Association Champion of Champions as a 15-year-old.

1996

Valley View golfer Lisa Jean became the youngest player to win the Goulburn Valley Champion of Champions title, the 15-year-old Year 10 student winning the event at Cobram-Barooga.

She had a round of 82-12-70 and was planning to concentrate on her next assignment, representing the Victorian under-18 girls’ side in the national titles in January 1997.

Dawes Road captains Bronwyn Hunter and Brett Andison with the trophy their school had not won in 10 years.

· Dawes Road Primary School was celebrating its first win since the mid-1980s in the Kyabram and District Sports Association event last week.

The school was competing against Haslem Street, St Augustine’s and Tongala primary schools.

Dawes Road school captains Bronwyn Hunter and Brett Andison led the way with Bronwyn winning the girls discus and Brett the champion of the high jump and discus events.

Tony “Rusty” McDonnell, Benny Gugliotti and Andrew Trimby present a framed jumper to 1996 premiership coach Peter White.

· Kyabram football premiership hero Peter White was missing presumed drowned after a triple fishing tragedy at Port Campbell.

White, or “Lippy” as he was known, had just played in the Bombers’ premiership team and had just informed the club he was intending to play on in 1997.

White, his 50-year-old father Cliff and a friend, Mark Bell, who was also 26, had not been sighted since leaving for the trip. Twin brother of the Bombers football star, Wes, withdrew from the trip at the last minute.

2006

Kristy Revell and Majestic Melody became champions at the Hunter Shepparton Agricultural Show’s horse section.

The 20-year-old had already won a state title as Victorian Rider of the Year three years earlier and had just returned from competing in Hobart.

Kristy and her sister Kimberly had also recently combined to win a Pair of Hacks competition and had been nominated as a Sportstar of the Year candidate.

· Four Haslem Street primary schoolers returned with gold from the state relay championships, winning the 10 years 4 x 100m event.

Emily Lawson, Carlie Whitford, Freya Findlay and Hayley Gentle took the title at Bendigo, finishing second in their heat and as the fourth fastest qualifier.

At the regional event they broke a record with a time of 1 minute, 41.99 seconds, while Lawson also finished 12th in the 10-year-old girls 200m and Whitford seventh in the 100m finals.

Jack Arnold was 12th in the 11 years boys 1500m event and the 10 years relay team of Eamon Ogden, Brent Roberts, Nathan O’Reilly and Tom Holman finished 13th in their event.

Lancaster’s Rebecca Luke qualified for the nationals by finishing third in the 12-13 years 800m event.

State relay champions Carlie Whitford, Hayley Gentle, Freya Findlay and Emily Lawson.

· Tom Wyatt made headlines when, as a 16-year-old, he made 153 runs in a single weekend for Tongala.

Son of veteran Dallas, Tom retired after making 40 against Stanhope in the KDCA under-17 competition and then scored 113 runs for the Kyabram association in a Northern Rivers competition game.
