Police have urged people to be aware of road rules about changing amber traffic lights after a crash in Kialla on Tuesday, August 29.

Police said a car travelling south on Goulburn Valley Hwy was turning right into Riverview Dve about 6.40pm, when it and a van travelling north on Goulburn Valley Hwy collided.

Shepparton Highway Patrol Senior Constable Mathew Farren said both drivers faced an amber light as they entered the intersection.

He warned drivers that road rules state a motorist must stop at an amber light “unless it is reasonably unsafe to do so”.

“It would stop these kinds of accidents happening,” he said.

Sen Constable Farren said the man driving the car would be fined for failing to give way and unlicensed driving.

The car driver, who was on a visitor’s visa from India, was driving with an international driver’s licence, but Sen Constable Farren said it was no longer valid as he had been in Victoria for more than six months.

The three people in the van and four in the car were not injured in the crash.
