Pool pricetag floated

The cost of a new swimming pool in Rochester has been estimated to be between $8 million and $13 million.

They were the figures delivered by Rochester Ward councillor Paul Jarman when quizzed during the latest Rochester Business Network gathering on Wednesday, November 29.

“A new pool is atop the council’s agenda with a purpose-built pool costing anywhere between $8 million and $13 million,” Cr Jarman said.

The pool has been closed since the October 2022 floods, but there had been issues at the facility before then.

“The pool was built in 1956 and has now gone past its use-by date,” Cr Jarman said.

“The footpaths are no longer fit for purpose, the locker rooms aren’t up to code and the pool’s filtration system has had upgrades over the years and is no longer suitable.”

Cr Jarman said he understood the residents’ frustration and a new, purpose-built pool for Rochester was “a top priority”.

Campaspe Shire Council backed Cr Jarman’s sentiments, saying a new pool was on its agenda, but it was waiting on funding.

“Council has engaged an external consultant who has been involved with the community on what they want to see happen with the Rochester pool, including their needs, location and concept design,” a council spokesperson said.

“Subject to the outcome of this report, the council will decide on the next steps for an aquatic facility in Rochester.

“We appreciate the community’s patience regarding the status of the Rochester pool.”

Council has encouraged Rochester residents to make use of the other outdoor pools around the shire, with free entry at the Colbinabbin, Kyabram, Lockington, Rushworth, Stanhope and Tongala pools this summer.
