Strathbogie Shire Council will be rolling out glass bins in 2025.

According to council’s waste data, 17 per cent of the community’s mixed recycling is made up of glass bottles and jars. But when this glass is broken and mixed with other recyclables, it is harder to recycle these materials.

Council’s interim chief executive officer Tim Tamlin said they are introducing the purple bin to be in line with the statewide efforts to improve recycling practices.

“By changing how we sort our waste and recycle at home, more glass bottles and jars can be turned into things like sand replacement for concrete and new glass jars,” he said.

“We’ve been so impressed by how engaged and passionate our Strathbogie residents already are about recycling.”

The purple glass bins will be rolled out in May 2025, and residents should be advised that the rollout will take several weeks to ensure every eligible household across the shire receives their new bin.

Purple bin collections are scheduled to begin in July 2025.
