The collection of purple lid bins in Greater Shepparton has begun.

The new glass only recycling service started on Monday, June 3.

The 120-litre purple lid bin is being used to collect glass bottles and jars, both with and without lids, complimenting the yellow lid bin of mixed recycling.

The new service aims to improve the recycling process by stopping broken glass from contaminating other recycled items like cardboard and plastic containers.

By collecting glass products separately, Greater Shepparton City Council aims to improve the recycling process and recover resources more efficiently.

The purple lid bin will be collected every four weeks, on the same day as the regular kerbside collection.

People can check council’s online bin calendar for specific collection dates.

Not all glass items are suitable for the purple lid bin. Items such as light globes and window panes should be disposed of in the general waste red lid bin or taken to the nearest Resource Recovery Centre.

Council has said there will be no service charge for the purple lid bin this financial year. The service charge will be included in annual rates and charges from the 2024-25 financial year, following the adoption of the budget at the June council meeting.
