As Victorians gear up for the festive season, the RACV is issuing crucial reminders about road safety, emphasising the need to adhere to road rules to ensure a safe and stress-free summer on the roads.
With a concerning 23.2 per cent increase in road fatalities, 287 lives lost on the state’s roads, in 2023, RACV urges motorists to stay vigilant and follow essential guidelines.
RACV stresses the importance of several rules, such as keeping to the left on multi-lane roads and refraining from stopping on freeways.
Stopping on the freeways is only allowed in emergencies, with violations incurring a $115 fine.
Victoria Police data reveals that over the past decade, nearly 10,000 infringements were issued for violations of these rules, totalling more than $1.5 million in fines.
RACV’s Head of Policy James Williams highlights that actions such as failing to keep left, stopping on freeways and tailgating frustrate drivers, but most importantly, they are unsafe and illegal.
Keeping left on multi-lane roads with a speed limit over 80 km/h is mandatory, except for overtaking, turning right, or in congested conditions.
Failing to comply can result in a $192 fine and a loss of two demerit points.
With increased holiday traffic, RACV advises thorough trip planning and staying informed about potential emergency warnings.
Motorists are urged to prioritise safety by scheduling breaks, following road rules, and being patient with fellow motorists to contribute to stress-free travel.
Before you hit the road, ensure that your tyre pressure, water and oil levels are checked and that your road assistance policy is up to date.
