Politicians from across the region have offered their condolences after Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Friday September 9, at the age of 96.
Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell said the monarch had been “a constant” in many people’s lives over the years.
“During her reign Queen Elizabeth was Head of State to 15 UK prime ministers from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss and has consulted with 16 Australian prime ministers,” he said.
“Her devotion to duty, service and decency provided an example for us to follow. Her commitment to the Commonwealth and to Australia was evident throughout her reign and on her 16 official visits to our shores.
“I offer my condolences on the passing of Queen Elizabeth the second ... a beacon of stability in an ever-changing world.”
Member for Farrer Sussan Ley said the day was tremendously sad for the world.
“Her commitment to duty never faltered ... we have lost one of the most substantial world figures of our time,” she said.
Ms Ley also said that Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Liz Truss was absolutely correct when she described the Queen as a rock on which modern Britain was built.
“For me the Queen’s reign is bookended by two defining images: that of a young woman who never expected to be monarch so soon, willingly taking on a lifetime of duty and service — and the grieving head of state, sitting stoically alone during COVID, at the funeral for Prince Philip.
“Thank you, Your Majesty, for everything.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese offered his respects in a televised address on Friday morning.
“Her Majesty celebrated our good times and she stood with us during trials and hardships, happy and glorious,” he said.
“Throughout her reign Queen Elizabeth II showed her deep affection for our country.”
