As flood alerts are issued for the Goulburn and Murray valleys, people are reminded to keep informed about what is happening in their area.
Tatura Search Emergency Service unit controller Bec Gould said people should keep an eye on the VicEmergency app, the Victoria SES website and the Shepparton Search and Rescue Facebook page for up-to-date information about flooding in their area.
Radio stations will also broadcast important flood information, and the McPherson Media Group will have a blog online each day with the latest news.
Ms Gould said it was also important people checked outside their home.
“Look outside and see what’s happening,” she said.
“Watch and act. And keep an eye on the (emergency) websites.”
In preparing for floods, Ms Gould recommended people put items up high in their house where flood water would not reach.
She also reminded people to elevate expensive things they kept in their shed — putting them up on bricks or anything else that would move them off the ground.
She also said people should have a battery-operated radio, candles and torches ready in case of power outages.
The radio will allow them to receive emergency warnings.
Importantly, Ms Gould said people should leave if they were worried, and go to higher ground.
“If it really floods, we can’t guarantee we’ll (SES) be there straight away,” she said.
