Goulburn-Murray Water has begun construction on a new bridge on Barnes Rd, approximately 10km south-east of Cobram.

The bridge crosses the Murray Valley No. 2 Channel, which is used by G-MW to deliver water to irrigators.

G-MW infrastructure delivery services general manager Warren Jose said now was the perfect time to undertake the work as it was the off-season.

“Between mid-May and mid-August, we do not have our usual water delivery obligations,” Mr Jose said.

“This provides us with a great opportunity to complete works like the bridge replacement on Barnes Rd, as such projects are not feasible when the channels are in use.”

The existing bridge was more than 70 years old and had deteriorated to the point it no longer met safety standards.

Traffic approaching the bridge along Parnell Rd is being diverted north to the Murray Valley Hwy, where it can travel east to Katamatite East School Rd, then west along Powerline Rd until it reaches Barnes Rd again.

The works will be completed by the end of September and Mr Jose is asking road users to take care in the area due to increased traffic and the presence of heavy vehicles.

“We apologise for any inconvenience that may result from the road closure,” he said.
