Rochester Secondary College celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Day by creating bookmarks to be handed out on Saturday, February 17.

The bookmarks were delivered to Rochester Library to be randomly given to customers during the day-long event.

Arts domain leader Meg Doller worked with the students to create one-off pieces showcasing their artistic talent.

“Over the past few weeks, students have taken part in designing beautiful one-off bookmarks,” she said.

New principal Matthew Koutroubas said he was thrilled with the day and how it contributed to a positive atmosphere.

“The bookmarks are a great opportunity for young people to do something for someone they’ll never meet,” he said.

“The act of gifting a small moment of joy to someone else aligns with our school values. We appreciate the support of the library staff in facilitating this community connection.”

Year 7 student Matilda said she was excited by the chance to express her creative side.

“It was fun to work with my friends doing something I love,” she said.

“I think whoever gets these bookmarks will enjoy them.”

Students who attend the college’s weekly Art Club created bookmarks using watercolour overlaid with drawing media.

The back of each bookmark features a quote promoting kindness.

The following are some of the quotes:

“Kindness is the mark we leave on the world.” — RAKtivist (short for Random Acts of Kindness activist).

“How do we change the world? One random act of kindness at a time.” — Morgan Freeman.

“Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness.” — Lucius Annaeus Seneca.

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” — Aesop.

“How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it.” — George Elliston.
