In the north of Shepparton District, Numurkah Town Hall was the polling place along the Goulburn Valley Hwy to get a democracy sausage on election day – served by the local Rotary Club.

Rotary Club of Numurkah’s Rex Shields said it was their first election day sausage sizzle for a while due to COVID-19.

“A couple of weeks ago when we had the floods that’s where all our money went from the sausage sizzles,” he said

“That’s where this is going – into the community.”

The club members were working in shifts to wield the tongs until about 4pm, or “depending on the people – if we’re selling them, we’ll stay,” Mr Shields said.

Serving up the classic sausage in bread with onion optional, there was a great display of customer service when this democracy sausage correspondent was asked their preference of onion placement – on top or underneath the sausage.

The answer being on top, of course.
