The Rotary Club of Benalla helped its longest serving member, Brian Greed, celebrate his 90th birthday at its meeting on Thursday, October 6.

Brian has been a member of the Rotary Club of Benalla since 1957, meaning he has achieved 65 years of community service.

As well as service with the Club, Brian is also a former Benalla Mayor serving three terms from 1966.

A Rotary spokesperson said looking back over Brian’s life he could best be described as knowing a lot about many different things.

“First and foremost Brian was a husband to June and a father to Sally, Ros and Graeme,” the spokesperson said.

“And it was great to be able to have his children present for the celebration.

“Brian has been a dentist, musician, a keen inventor, a shooter, fisherman, farmer, pilot and a board member of Benalla Art Gallery.”

He has also given service to the community, local government and Benalla Rotary for the past 65 years.

Brian studied dental science and began practising in Melbourne, doing several stints as a locum in various country towns.

After acting as a locum in Benalla he established a practice in town.

He has been a farmer owning property in Moorngag, Samaria and Kilfeera. He was also a pilot for 25 years and joined the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians.

In recognition of his tireless work for the community through his involvement in local government, and community service, Brian was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 1995.

Brian was appointed chairman of the local Water Board and went on to oversee the construction of water treatment plant to address the problem of poor quality water that the town had suffered for many years.

The Brian Greed Water Treatment Plant was constructed and open in 1999.

As a member of the Rotary Club of Benalla Brian served as president in 1964.

During his time with the club he has participated in various committees.

On the night a wonderful birthday cake was prepared by Lois Smith, which was enjoyed by all present who wished Brian a very happy birthday.
