Shepparton Art Museum has reduced its opening days from seven to six days a week in 2023, with the café following suit, but has extended its weekend opening hours.

SAM changed its opening days as of January 1 to close to the public on Tuesdays.

SAM chief executive Melinda Martin said the changes were made to align the museum with the six-day-week art industry norm.

“SAM and the SAM Café will be closed every Tuesday to allow museum staff to undertake minor maintenance and exhibition activities, which often require the use of heavy machinery,” she said.

“This will result in fewer sporadic closures and create fewer interruptions during our opening days.”

Ms Martin said a decision had also been made to extend weekend hours to 5pm, giving visitors more of an opportunity to enjoy time at the facility outside their own working hours.

SAM is now open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am to 4pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

For SAM at Sunset, SAM will remain open until 8pm on the last Thursday of each month from February to November.

The facility’s hours remain at 10am to 4pm on normal weekdays.
