Most people around the Seymour Football Netball Club would have only ever known one club secretary, Gary Brown, during their time at the club.
But now it’s the end of an era, as after more than three decades of service, Mr Brown’s retirement will be announced at the Seymour Football Netball Club annual general meeting, to be held tonight at 6pm.
Celebrating his 77th birthday last week, Mr Brown has had an incredible innings as club secretary, serving 34 years and seeing many generations of players and volunteers pass through the club.
A life member of the Goulburn Valley Football Netball League, he has been a dedicated and vital part of the Seymour Football Netball Club for most of his life and the mainstay behind many club presidents.
Former Vice President and then President of the club Stuart Locke remembers their first meeting clearly.
“He was the first person I met when I walked into the footy grounds way back in 1991 and he was the secretary then… he and I both remember that conversation at that time and place and that was 32 years ago,” Mr Locke said.
“It’s a really big moment in the clubs history… People like Gary are the glue that binds the place.
“You get anyone to be a volunteer at a place for 30 odd years, that’s just incredible.”
Former president of both Seymour and Avenel football clubs Trevor Gunn said Mr Brown had earned a reputation as being one of the most diligent and knowledgeable secretaries and club administrators in the GVL.
“He’s done a great job, it’s a sad to day to see him retire,” Mr Gunn said.
Mr Brown’s commitment to the club and its players went beyond his role secretary.
“It’s amazing the time commitment he has put into the club. He was always the club representative for the league, it was not a Saturday job... the sacrifice he has given to the club over the years can really never be repaid,” Mr Gunn said.
“He is a bit famous for presenting an annual report ... he would gather a few photos from throughout the year and recognise any good work of people done throughout the year, as well as making sure any legal requirements were done.”
Past treasurer, informal assistant to Mr Brown and fellow life member of the Goulburn Valley Football Netball League Ken Daniel also mused on Mr Brown’s contributions to the club.
“He’s done a very good job, he puts a lot of time into the club, he does a lot of work behind the scenes,” Mr Daniel said.
“He’s a great guy, a great friend. I’ve had terrific times with him ... I hope he still wants to go to the footy, go together to away games.”
After years of dedication and service to the club, those that know Mr Brown are hopeful that he will finally have a chance to watch the footy, without the clipboard in hand.
