The Shepparton Albanian Moslem Society has been awarded a $250,000 grant to fund an exciting new project.
Victorian Multicultural Affairs Minister Ingrid Stitt visited the society in Shepparton on Wednesday, July 3, to announce that it would receive a grant from the $9.7 million Multicultural Community Infrastructure Fund.
It has been given just over $250,000 to build an outdoor covered shelter, which aims to help the local Albanian Muslim community host events at their existing facility on Acacia St in Shepparton.
Shepparton Albanian Society president Reg Qemal said the shelter will be a “valuable addition” to the existing complex, and it will “provide a versatile space for various events”.
“(It’s) something that has been missing as part of this complex for quite some time,” he said.
“The shelter will facilitate a more inclusive environment, accommodating a growing community and fostering stronger connections.
“It’s going to enhance what we do here, and it’s going to be a great facility for the community. ”
Mr Qemal also said the shelter will eliminate the costs of hiring marquees and associated equipment and provide a dedicated space for religious, cultural and community events all year round.
Ms Stitt said it was “wonderful” to be in Shepparton for the announcement, and for the Shepparton Albanian Moslem Society to “expand the space you have available for the whole community”.
“The Victorian Government is absolutely thrilled to be able to support this project,” she said.
“Shepparton would not be the place it is today without your strong community spirit, and all the work you’ve done over many decades.
“I’d love to come back when it’s finished and have a look.”
Ms Stitt also said she’s “really proud of the multicultural community across the state”.
“We’re proud to continue our work to support Victoria’s multicultural and multifaith communities, and ensure that all Victorians have spaces where they can feel proud and safe to express who they are.
“This latest round of funding will ensure multicultural Victorians can access the facilities that bring communities together, and to share and preserve their culture and traditions.”
Mr Qemal said shelter construction should start at the beginning of August, and will be up by December.
