Thursday, June 6, marked a momentous day, officially revealing an exchange that took place over a year ago.

On April 23, 2023, former City of Shepparton councillor and mayor Murray Slee gave a priceless gift to celebrate his 100th birthday.

Mr Slee has made a significant impact on Greater Shepparton.

Born in Stanhope in 1923, he moved to Shepparton in 1937 at the age of 14 with his family, where his father secured a job as an auctioneer.

Mr Slee was elected to council in 1956 and remains the longest-serving councillor to this day.

He worked tirelessly for 34 years, serving his community and leading as mayor for three terms from 1976 to 1979.

In 2001, Mr Slee received the Order of Australia Medal for his outstanding service to local government and the Shepparton community.

“Murray’s life is truly admirable. He is a man who has done so much for his community, and our region is blessed to have had his guidance and support during his time as mayor and councillor,” Cr Sali.

“Today, we are honoured to unveil the blazer he gifted us on his 100th birthday.

“We have framed and displayed it proudly in the foyer outside the council boardroom to showcase Murray’s legacy and inspire generations to come.”
