Theft: Up to $35,000 worth of cigarettes were stolen from a new Shepparton business.

Up to $35,000 worth of cigarettes were stolen from a new Shepparton business on Sunday, May 5.

Shepparton police Sergeant Mark Phillips said two people stole all the cigarettes and some lollies from confectionery shop and tobacconist Sweet Surprises between 1am and 2am.

He said the pair got into the shop on the corner of Vaughan and Maude Sts, after throwing a rock through the front window and climbing in through the large hole it left.

The business had only been open for a matter of weeks.

Sgt Phillips said the pair loaded all the packets of cigarettes from the business — which the owner estimated to have a retail value of up to $35,000 — into a bag before leaving a few minutes later.

Both people were wearing dark clothing; one left on a bike and the other on foot south along Maude St, Sgt Phillips said.

Anyone who saw anything about this time, or who has been offered cheap cigarettes to buy, is urged to call Shepparton police Crime Investigation Unit on 5820 5777, or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au
