Shepparton winter weather 2024 wrap

Pack away the blankets, get ready to swap hot chocolates for iced lattes and forget about wearing slippers.

Winter is out and spring is in.

But before we move on, let’s look back at the season that was winter 2024 in Shepparton.

On Wednesday, June 19, Shepparton residents shivered through a -3.6℃ night according to records taken by the Bureau of Meteorology at the Shepparton Airport site.

It was the coldest June night since 2007 when temperatures hit an even lower -4℃.

The Tatura Institute Sustainable Agriculture site recorded -4.2℃ on that same night, and Echuca Aerodome recorded a toe-freezing -5℃.

Benalla was the warmest of the four locations, recording a -3.1℃ overnight the same evening.

On the flip side, the warmest winter night was on Saturday, June 29, when the mercury dropped to a 9.7℃ low.

There was a total of nine days of rain in June with the wettest day being Sunday, June 30, with a total rainfall of 11.2mm.

This was a stark difference to the same month last year, with June 2023 drenching Shepparton with a total of 118mm and 54.8mm falling on one day, Thursday, June 8.

Shepparton had a drier July than usual this year, despite it raining on more days.

The Bureau of Meteorology rain gauge recorded a total of 27.4mm in the city for the month.

This is well down on the historical mean over the past 28 years of 40.2mm of rain in July.

It rained on 18 winter days this year, with the highest daily rainfall recorded in the 24 hours to 9am on July 9 when 7.2mm fell.

Of all the rainy days, there was less than 1mm of rain on 11 of them.

The historical mean number of days of rain is 14.2, meaning there were more rainy days than usual this year.

However, rainfall less than 1mm is usually only recorded on eight days of the month.

The highest ever rainfall for July saw 137.2mm recorded in 1995.

The highest ever amount of rain in one day in July was 42mm on July 24, 2003.

The coldest July night saw temperatures drop to an icy -2.2°C on July 31 this year, while the warmest night saw the temperature drop to only 9.9°C on July 9.

Looking more recently, August was warm, with both hotter-than-usual days and nights.

The warmest day was on Sunday, August 25 when the temperature reached a high of 23.1℃.

The warmest day recorded in August was 24.8℃ and the mean highest daytime temperature for August in Shepparton is 15℃ according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The hottest night was on Wednesday, August 28 when Shepparton had the highest night-time temperature of 12.4℃.

In terms of coolest days and nights, the coldest day was 12.9℃ on Monday, August 5 and night being -2.7℃ on Thursday, August 1.

Looking towards the clouds, August had nine days of rain yielding a total of 19.4mm throughout the month.

The wettest August day was Monday, August 26 when 8.8mm of rain fell.
