Support the bridge: Cr Laura Binks calls on the community to support the future of Kirwans Bridge.

Strathbogie Shire Council is calling on people to show their support for Kirwans Bridge by uploading a video, photos or a written message to a digital wall of support.

Mayor Laura Binks said the digital wall would be sent to potential funders to show how important the bridge was to the community.

“Strathbogie Shire Council is committed to a long-term sustainable future for Kirwans Bridge,” she said.

“Thanks to the Kirwans Bridge Community Panel, we have a community-led design, and we know how much it’s going to cost.

“All we need now is the funding, so we are doing everything we can to send a message to the Victorian and Australian governments that cannot be ignored.”

Council has been working with the Kirwans Bridge Community Panel to determine the best option for the bridge’s long-term future.

The panel is deciding between two options.

The first option maintains the existing single-lane bridge by undertaking a complete renovation, including replacing the decking with timber planks and steel grinders, which would have a 25-year lifespan and is estimated to cost about $5.5 million.

The second option also maintains the existing bridge but replaces the timber decking with a concrete deck slab, with a lifespan of 50 years and an estimated cost of $6.5 million.

“This is an essential piece of infrastructure in our shire, and we need your support to send this message to government,” Cr Binks said.

“Together, we can achieve great things.”
