Two people were rescued from a home on Tuesday, March 22, by two passersby after a back shed went up in flames.
Firefighters and police were called to Graeme St, Mooroopna, at 8am after a shed caught fire and flames were spreading towards the two-storey home.
The brother and sister living in the top storey saw smoke coming from below the stairs and made their way to the balcony to escape.
Two passersby saw them and stopped to help them get down from the balcony with a ladder.
Mooroopna police Senior Constable Steve Turpin said that after the siblings were rescued, the man attempted to put the fire out, which left him with burns.
“Originally the male occupant tried to put the fire out with his garden hose but it got too much for him, so he tried to move the car out of the driveway,” he said.
Both were taken to hospital by ambulance to Goulburn Valley Health.
The man was being treated for burns to his arms and shoulder and the women for smoke inhalation
Sen Constable Turpin said the fire was being treated as non-suspicious but the cause was under investigation.
CFA crews were at the address until 12.30pm putting out the fire, which came close to damaging neighbouring properties, Sen Constable Turpin said.
“The shed burnt to the ground and it spread into the upstairs apartment,” he said.
“There’s also some damage to neighbour’s property like the fence and a little bit of their car port.”
The incident is being investigated by a CFA fire investigator because a person was injured.
