Fright gets a place

In Tuesday’s edition we alerted you to the fact a horse with local connections would be racing at Echuca on Melbourne Cup Day.

While Fright didn’t take a first placing in race five at Echuca as hoped, the three year-old bay gelding by Brazen Beau from Gretna did place third.

Brodie and Danni Bennett are among a long list of owners, with most of the others based in Melbourne.

Fright is trained by Alex Rae of Cranbourne.

As the Pastoral Times went to print Monday, Fright was considered to be a hot tip at Echuca, but the TAB had him at 141:1.

By race day, Fright’s odds were shortened to be the favourite at $3.40.

Pickleball popularity

The game of pickleball is gaining traction and popularity in the Deniliquin, with two local sporting organisations trying to introduce it.

The Deniliquin Lawn Tennis Club is planning to host a pickleball tournament on November 29, at the Charlotte St courts.

It will be a twilight event, and could lend itself nicely to an early Christmas party idea.

It will coincide with a social evening for the tennis club.

But before then, Deniliquin Stadium will host a pickleball come and try night this Tuesday, November 12.

It will begin at 7pm and anyone ages 12 and up is welcome to participate.

So what is pickleball?

It is a paddle and ball sport with a perfect balance of court dimensions, rules and equipment to afford all skill levels and age groups.

It is often explained as a hybrid of tennis, badminton and table tennis.

It is played on a badminton-sized court with a net, but involves less running than tennis.

Using a paddle and plastic wiffle ball, the game is a combination of tactical shots, patience, and easy to learn strokes.
