Cobram’s Sit ‘n’ Sew is a group of ladies who meet together each Wednesday and make crafts, but not just for themselves; a large portion of the ladies make items to give away to places where there is a need.
Irvin House has been the recipient of some crochet rugs and lap quilts. Other group members have made baby jumpers and beanies for use in Australia and overseas.
One participant has even made jumpers for a charity in Melbourne, which gives them to baby lambs.
“A lot of the work that’s done in the group is donated,” group participant Janet Austin said.
Ms Austin said the group also provided a good social opportunity for the people who come along.
“There’s some elderly ladies who come and sit and chat with us for hours,” she said.
“The older ladies need the company so there’s the mental health aspect too ... so it’s not just the crafting, it’s the other side as well.”
The group is currently working on its contribution to decorate the town for Christmas.
The group also collects donations to organisations that assist the community, including $400 to the Cobram SES, $100 to Cobram Riding for the Disabled and $400 to Angel Flight.
The group’s primary purpose is crafting and not fundraising, but it makes donations as they come up.
The group meets from 10am to 2pm each Wednesday at the Cobram Senior Citizens rooms on Hay Ave.
