So many snakes

Harry Rowlands spotted this brown snake on the dairy platform.

Gunbower dairy farmer Harry Rowlands got the fright of his life when he went to set up the shed for the afternoon milking recently.

He was walking past the platform and out of the corner of his eye noticed something unusual; upon closer inspection he realised it was huge, seven-foot brown snake.

Mr Rowlands believes the snake slithered up onto the platform via the race and had no idea how to get back down.

“I am just grateful I saw it before it crawled up into the feed trough or something like that, who knows what could have happened once we started milking,” he said.

Mr Rowlands said this year had certainly been a good year for snakes; he reckons he is averaging at least two sightings a week.

“They are all really big and fat and I am guessing they are eating all the frogs that have bred up after the 2022 floods.

“We used to just see the odd black snake but now I am seeing browns as well — I have never seen so many snakes as I have this year.”
