South West Music has launched a brand new school holiday program which is teaching the art of musical theatre.

Targeted at students aged 13 to 24, a host of coaching sessions and workshops are being held this month based on the theatre production Songs for a New World by Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown.

Students will learn the skills essential to musical theatre - performing, sound engineering, design, event management, stage management, production and marketing.

The culmination of the program will be a ‘one night only’ performance of Songs for a New World on Saturday, January 21.

With a rousing score that blends elements of pop, gospel and jazz, Songs for a New World transports its audience from the deck of a Spanish sailing ship bound for a new land to the ledge of a New York penthouse.

Characters range from a young man in the Bronx who dreams of becoming a famous basketball player, to a forlorn and neglected Mrs Claus lamenting as Christmas approaches.

The finale performance will be held at the South West Music Regional Conservatorium in Cressy St, Deniliquin from 4pm. There will be complimentary drinks and nibbles.

While the performance is free, thanks to NSW Government funding, those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP to concerts@swmusic.org.au.

Production crew members Stella Bashford, Raph Nelley, Peta Thomas, Angus Rae, Molly Edmunds and Richard Sievers.
Head teacher Paul Young has been accompanying the performers at rehearsals this week.
