Spring towards warmer days

Spring has sprung, as Shepparton shrugs off the colder months and heads towards hopefully some warmer weather.

Shepparton’s winter temperatures were close to normal this year; however, the coldest night in four years did occur this winter.

The town’s winter rainfall varied this year, with two months wetter than usual and one drier.

August saw slightly warmer than usual days and nights this year, with the mean daytime temperature of 15.3℃ only 0.4℃ higher than the monthly mean taken from the past 26 years.

The warmest August day this year saw the mercury reach 19.5℃ on August 28, while the coldest day for the month was a chilly 12.2℃ on August 11.

Night-time temperatures were warmer this year at 4.8℃, compared to the August mean of 3.7℃.

The coldest night saw -1.5℃ recorded on August 21, while the warmest night saw 11.8℃ on August 29.

July had slightly warmer days and colder nights than usual.

The coldest night for the past four years was also recorded in July, with the mercury plummeting to a chilly -3.4℃ in Shepparton on July 20.

The mean night-time temperature for July was 2℃ — a little cooler than the historical mean of 3.4℃ recorded over the past 26 years.

Day-time temperatures were a little higher than normal this year, with the mean temperature of 14℃ slightly above the historical mean over the past 26 years of 13.3℃.

June temperatures were close to normal for that time of year — with slightly warmer days and colder nights.

Daytime temperatures were ever so slightly down on usual, with a mean temperature of 13.4℃, compared to the historical mean of 14.2℃.

June night-time temperatures were slightly warmer than usual, with a mean of 4.6℃ compared to the historical mean of 3.7℃.

June and August were wetter months than usual; however, July bucked the trend and was a lot drier than in other years.

August this year saw more total rain and many more rainy days than usual.

This year 60.6mm of rain fell in Shepparton for the month, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

This is above the average August rainfall of 44.8mm over the past 26 years.

It is also slightly more than the mean August rainfall of 59.7mm recorded by the bureau at Lemnos between 1965 and 1996.

This year also saw a lot more rainy days than normal, with rain falling on 20 different days, compared to an average of 12.7 over the past 26 years.

The highest daily rainfall this August saw 12.8mm recorded on August 23.

The start of winter was also slightly wetter than usual, with a total of 46.4mm falling during June.

This is up slightly on the historical June monthly mean of 38.8mm taken from the past 26 years.

July’s rainfall, however, was almost half of what it usually is at that time of year.

This year, just 19.2mm of rain fell in Shepparton during July.

This is well down on the historical average over the past 26 years of 42mm for the month.
