The close-knit community of St Mary’s Seymour has cause for celebration.
The introduction of years 11 and 12 to the college means teachers can now see students through to the end of their formal education.
Year 10 student leaders Andrew Bree and Zac Brown were eager to share the college they have grown to love with prospective St Mary’s families as they led school tours on Thursday, May 4.
Both Zac and Andrew will be completing their VCE studies at St Mary’s.
Zac has attended St Mary’s since Foundation and has continued his education alongside many familiar faces who will now be able to see him graduate.
“Mrs Spencer still loves to read The Enchanted Wood to her students, which is the same book that she read to us in Foundation,” he said.
For existing students, the familiarity with teachers provides the confidence and comfort to ask questions in a supportive environment, allowing them to reach their full potential.
“All the teachers here are really nice. From Year 7 I was a bit nervous, but growing with friends and the teachers has helped,” Andrew said.
Camaraderie between students is also expected to deepen as they venture in to the most challenging years of their education.
Living in Yea, Andrew had previously planned to follow in his brother’s footsteps and complete VCE in Lillydale.
“I know my older brother is jealous because he really loved St Mary’s and he came here from Year 7 and had to leave at the end of Year 10. I reckon that might have hurt him a little bit,” Andrew said.
“My brother's school is a lot bigger. There are 250 kids in his year level and he hardly knows anyone.
“Continuing on, I know St Mary's students that are coming from Yea, so I will know them as well.”
Andrew is currently studying the VET subject of animal care at Assumption College through a VET cluster. Continuing at St Mary’s, he will be able to finish the VET course and complete one VCE subject before entering Year 12.
Zac is also currently taking VCE mathematics.
VCE co-ordinator Simone McLaughlin said as the students grew, so would St Mary’s.
“The full VCE and VCE-vocational major will be offered. Students will be able to explore their passions whilst receiving a tailored and high-quality education,” Ms McLaughlin said.
The college has applied for a Stage One Building Application Grant to build a VCE centre.
It is exciting times ahead for students and the broader college community.
