Stanhope two runs shy of first victory

River Dunbar can’t hide his excitement as Stanhope junior coach Jayke Fisher raises his finger to signal another Tongala wicket for his Stanhope under-13 team in Wednesday evening’s second round of Goulburn Murray Cricket competition.

Stanhope and Tongala played a thrilling Goulburn Murray Cricket under-13 match which ended with the Blues winning by two runs.

Tongala captain Kevin Maurizi elected to bat after winning the toss and set the tone with a four-boundary 18-run total before being removed by Ashton Nurse.

Tongala finished its 20 overs with 4-78, Lucas Pyke striking three boundaries in his run-a-ball 15 in the middle order.

Kane Pyke struck one boundary from his innings for Tongala, with twin brother Lucas scoring 15 not out as the team won by two runs.

Nurse, Alyssa Braithwaite, Braxton Davis and River Dunbar took a wicket for Stanhope, with Nurse also a star with the bat.

He came in at number three and struck two boundaries in his 17 (retired) total, the only double figure tally for his team.

Cooper Fisher was nine not out from his 15 deliveries as Stanhope finished on 4-76, two runs shy of a first win for the season.

River Dunbar is the centre of this wicket-taking celebration as Stanhope under-13 players meet mid-pitch in the game against Tongala.

· Kyabram Fire Brigade’s under-17 team has put a frustrating round one draw behind it by taking a six-wicket win against Bamawm-Lockington United.

The team amassed 4-174 from 40 overs in its round one match, but the game was abandoned on week two.

Openers Oscar Carver and Marley Gordon set up the run chase after BLU was all out for 92 from 36.1 overs.

Carver scored an unbeaten half-century from 79 deliveries, including five boundaries, while Gordon faced 32 deliveries for his two-boundary 17.

Wil Harrison spent 51 balls at the crease for his eight runs, supporting the dominant Carver in a 40-run partnership.

Fire Brigade finished 4-79 from 28.3 overs, Carver rounding out his game after taking 2-8 from six overs on day one of the game.

Charlie Isaac and Oliver Barnett both took three wickets in support.
