Statue unveiling this Sunday

Sculpture artist Brett Garling and Ross Wells with a partially completed statue earlier this year.

The long-awaited unveiling ceremony of the Monash/Ned Kelly statue will take place this Sunday, with the star attraction arriving in town on Friday.

The day’s entertainment will begin around 11am, with the Albury/Wodonga Pipes & Drums band heralding the start of events.

Lachie Cossar will demonstrate his horsemanship skills, and members of the Light Horse Brigade will mingle among the spectators.

Hopefully, children from both primary schools will provide performances on bucket drums.

At 2pm Michael Bennett, great-grandson of Sir John Monash, will give an address.

The official unveiling of the statue depicting the meeting of the young John Monash with Ned Kelly in Jerilderie in 1877-78 will be performed by Dr Tom Fischer, the brother of the late Tim Fischer.

Everyone is then invited to afternoon tea at the Civic Hall.

It is suggested that you bring a picnic chair and perhaps a name tag.

A hat would not go astray either.

Staff and residents at the Jerilderie MPS are holding a ‘happy hour’ twice monthly from 2.30pm to 4.30pm on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month.

The residents’ garden/front verandah area will be the venue for the gatherings.

Snacks and non-alcoholic punch will be provided, but BYO other drinks.

Everyone is welcome, but please don’t attend if you are feeling unwell.

This is an opportunity for a social catch up for residents, families, friends, and members of the community.
