Tracked: A police helicopter followed an allegedly stolen car as it was driven at high speeds between Goulburn Valley towns.

A stolen car was allegedly driven at speeds of up to 200km/h while tracked by a police helicopter.

Shepparton Crime Investigation Unit Senior Constable Zac Clarke said the stolen Volkswagen Golf was spotted by the Police Air Wing about 11am on Friday, April 19, at the service station on the Midland Hwy in Byrneside.

The car had allegedly been stolen about a week earlier from Numurkah.

On Friday, the police helicopter followed the vehicle from Byrneside to Riverside Plaza in Kialla.

Police allege that it was driven at speeds up to 200km/h during this time.

The car was dumped at Riverside Plaza, and three people police allege were in the stolen car were picked up by another person in another vehicle.

They were driven to Shepparton Plaza on the corner of Benalla Rd and Archer St, where police arrested all four on Friday afternoon.

The alleged driver of the stolen car, an 18-year-old Shepparton man, and his passengers, a 20-year-old Shepparton man and a 16-year-old Hastings boy, have all been charged with theft of a vehicle.

The man who picked the trio up from Kialla has been exonerated of any wrongdoing and was released without any charges.

The 18-year-old has also been charged with reckless conduct endangering life, driving in a dangerous manner, driving while disqualified, and two counts of handling stolen goods.

Police allege the 18-year-old was also involved in a previous incident at 1am on Sunday, April 14, when police spotted the Volkswagen in Shepparton.

Police allege the 18-year-old was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle when he allegedly turned the car’s headlights off and drove away from police when they tried to stop him in Archer St, Shepparton.

He has been charged with driving in a dangerous manner while pursued by police, failing to stop on police direction, and driving while disqualified.

The man was on parole at the time of both incidents and has been returned to a youth justice centre while awaiting the finalisation of this matter in court.
