A tractor was stolen from Arcadia South, chased by police on a freeway, and came to a stop after it crashed into an army base on Saturday, police claim.

Sergeant Darren Wagstaff said a John Deere tractor, worth $150,000, was allegedly stolen from property in Arcadia South on Saturday morning.

Police later had calls from the public about a tractor veering across both lanes and colliding with barriers on the Hume Fwy near Seymour, Sgt Wagstaff said.

Police tried to intercept the tractor, and when they were unable to, they continued to chase it.

The tractor crashed through the front fence at Puckapunyal Military Base, where it came to a stop.

Police arrested a 36-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman, both from the Western Australia town of Narrogin.

They were both charged with theft the tractor, theft of a trailer, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, driving in a dangerous manner, dangerous driving while pursued by police, failing to stop on police direction, criminal damage, trespassing on Commonwealth land, and possessing methamphetamines.
