After days of extreme heat in the Goulburn Valley, a storm on Tuesday night brought some cool relief, rain and some high winds to the region.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Shepparton reached a top of 35.6ºC at 3.30pm on Tuesday, January 17, before the rain and wind arrived about 9.30pm.

That cool change helped the mercury drop to 22ºC by midnight.

Wind gusts up to 70km/h were recorded and 25.4mm of rain fell between 9.30pm and 1.30am as lightning and thunder rolled across Shepparton.

There were 250 calls for help to the SES statewide from midnight to 8.30am on Wednesday, but the north-east of the state escaped the worst of the damage.

According to the SES, there were 21 calls for assistance in the Hume region; 17 for trees down and two for building damage.

All four calls for assistance to the Shepparton Search and Rescue crew were for fallen trees.

Shepparton is expected to hit a top of 25 degrees on Wednesday, with tops of 24, 29, 29 and 31 for the rest of the week.
