Structural problems have been found at the Wunghnu water tower.
The issues were discovered after a condition assessment by Goulburn Valley Water, with temporary fencing installed as a precaution while further assessment work is carried out.
The water tower was constructed in 1906 by renowned engineer General Sir John Monash of the Reinforced Concrete and Monier Piper Construction Company.
It was decommissioned in the 1980s and replaced with a ground-level 1.1 megalitre storage tank at a different location, with treated water supplied from Numurkah.
The historic tower has undergone condition and safety assessments as part of the Goulburn Valley Water’s tower assessment program.
Goulburn Valley Water managing director Steve Capewell said ongoing surveillance was critical to safely manage the company’s historic towers and assets.
“The assessment has identified problems with the Wunghnu tower, so we’re looking for a solution that recognises its historical importance while making sure the site is safe for residents and visitors,” he said.
Goulburn Valley Water has been working with VicRoads and the Moira Shire Council to explore future options.
