Stylish Cup Day celebrations

Melbourne Cup Day prize winners Sue Escott-Braybon, Shelley Massina and Jenny Philpot.

About 80 ladies gathered at the Finley Golf Club in their stunning outfits on Melbourne Cup Day as guests of Murray Hut CWA members.

A beautiful luncheon was catered for by Finley High School hospitality students under the guidance of Tess McNamara and Gay Maxwell and the presentation was a credit to the young people.

There was plenty of activity during the day to keep everyone occupied. Sweeps, raffles and a little bet on the side with each race displayed on several televisions, strategically placed around the room.

The difficult task of choosing contenders for the Lady of the Day, Lady with the Best Shoes and Lady with the Best Hat was taken on by judges Pat Watt and Rosemary Brooks from Cobram.

Ladies from Jerilderie, Tocumwal, Cobram and Finley dressed so beautifully in such a variety of fashion that it was a very hard decision to make.

However, the judges finally came to the conclusion that Shelley Massina deserved the honour of Lady of the Day, Sue Escott-Braybon’s shoes excelled, and Jenny Philpot did an exceptional job of making her own hat from odds and ends she procured around her home.

Winners of the great raffle prizes were as follows: $1000 Airbnb voucher (donated by Kelly Grains) - Laura Sykes (Finley); $250 Luxury Escapes voucher - Maree Thomas (Jerilderie); $150 Harvey Norman voucher - Dave Gower (Numurkah).

There was also a successful auction conducted by Greg McNamara, who is well known for his ability to encourage people to spend up for a good cause.
