Most submissions on a Strategic Cycling Corridor to connect Shepparton’s railway station to Victoria Park Lake and the Greater Shepparton Secondary College supported the project as a way of making bicycle travel safer for people of all ages and promoting cycling as a viable means of transport.

A report on the public consultation was noted at the Greater Shepparton City Council meeting on June 21.

The plan forms part of the Victorian Government’s Strategic Cycling Corridors for City of Greater Shepparton which supports commuter and other trips, such as to railway stations, shops or schools, employment and activity centres, and other regional destinations.

The draft designs provide for on and off-road connections along Hayes, St, Baker St, Purcell St, St Georges Rd, Thompson St and Railway Pde in Shepparton.

The upgrades identified in the draft designs allow for improved safety outcomes for both cyclists and pedestrians; strengthening the connectivity within the eastern areas of Shepparton.

Council conducted community consultation on the draft designs with local residents and businesses between April 1 and May 2, 2022, with a total of 12 submissions received.

“The support for the cycling corridor was pleasing to see,’’ Mayor Shane Sali said.

"Whilst we didn’t receive a lot of community feedback, it was quite positive.

“Providing a safer cycling route for secondary school students and others is really important and I’m glad to see we are progressing this project.”

Council will use feedback from submissions to prepare the final designs and seek funding for construction from the Victorian Government.
