Stage 2 of the Sydney Street Rejuvenation Project in Kilmore is getting under way, as stage 1A nears completion, with just tree planting and line marking to be completed.
Mitchell Shire Council says works have begun on the eastern side of the street as part of stage 1B, with these works to see the renewal of some sections of damaged kerbs and footpaths, new street trees and garden plantings and the pedestrian outstand at Mitchell St.
The council said works would begin Monday, July 25 on the western section of Sydney St between Union St and Bourke St as part of stage 2A.
Key features of Stage 2 include the installation of kerb outstands at the Mill St Mall and in front of the Commonwealth Bank to provide more footpath space, some bluestone pavements, new street trees and the installation of two new public bus stops.
The concurrent works on stage 1B and 2A will mean increased disruption to pedestrians and traffic on Sydney St.
Local businesses will still be open, but shoppers should check with them for access arrangements as works continue.
People are advised by council to take care when travelling and shopping in Kilmore and follow all directional signage while the works are under way.
While some parking spaces are occupied by the works, there is still off-street parking behind the Royal Oak Hotel on the west side and at the Kilmore Library.
Mayor Bill Chisholm said the project was an important part of “preparing for Kilmore and Mitchell Shire’s future”.
“Recently released Census data shows Kilmore is continuing to grow, with an estimated population of 10,363 people,” he said.
“The Sydney Street Rejuvenation Project means better infrastructure for current residents and traders and those that will come here in the future.
“We appreciate the patience shown by Kilmore traders and residents during the works. We know they are an inconvenience, but they are vital for the future of the town.”

The project team will also be available for drop-in discussions at the Kilmore Library every Tuesday from 9am to 5pm and on Thursdays between noon and 5pm, during the construction phase.
