Tastes to showcase Rutherglen’s best

Tastes of Rutherglen returns next month March 8 and 9.

The annual Tastes of Rutherglen festival, hosted by the Winemakers of Rutherglen, is set to make a grand return next month over the Labour Day long weekend.

This gastronomic festival once again promises to spotlight the region’s celebrated wines, exquisite produce, and culinary delights, offering a unique experience for enthusiasts and novices alike.

Over the course of the weekend, 16 of Rutherglen’s esteemed wineries will fling open their cellar doors, inviting guests to embark on a journey of taste and discovery.

Visitors will have the rare opportunity to delve into the heart of the 2024 vintage, sample some of the first releases from 2023, and even join the winemaking process through exclusive tours and tastings.

Featuring more than 200 wines, personalised menus at each winery, 10 masterclasses, and 11 special events, the festival offers an unparalleled platform for direct interaction with Rutherglen’s vintners. This hands-on approach aims to bridge the gap between the creators and consumers of wine, fostering a deeper appreciation for the craft.

The festivities kick off on Friday, March 8, with the “A Welcome Wine” event at The Victoria Hotel’s Garden Room. From 5:30pm to 7:00pm, guests can enjoy a selection of regional delicacies prepared by Chef Brendan Anderson, alongside a diverse array of Rutherglen wines. Priced at $40 per person, the evening promises an intimate setting for stories, canapés, and the finest wines from 16 local wineries.

Highlights of the 2024 program include a variety of masterclasses, such as the Traditional Sparkling Masterclass at Andrew Buller Wines and the Portuguese Masterclass at Stanton & Killeen Wines, offering insights into rare and alternative varietals. Special events like the Harvest Dinner at Jones Winery & Vineyard and the GATHER by KIN dinner at All Saints Estate provide exquisite dining experiences, pairing innovative cuisine with exceptional wines.

Admission to the Tastes of Rutherglen festival is $40, covering tastings at all participating wineries, a keepsake tasting glass, and on-site entertainment. For those preferring not to indulge in alcohol, designated drivers are offered complimentary admission and refreshments. Additionally, a hop-on/hop-off Winery Shuttle Bus service is available for $40 per day, with regional bus services from surrounding cities priced at $50 per day, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
