Shepparton Arts Theatre Group has reignited its creative spirit this week with performances of The Drowsy Chaperone.

The rendition of the witty 1998 musical has given audiences the chance to belly laugh, tear up and leave feeling anything but drowsy.

As part of the cast of 30, on stage are renowned STAG players John Head, Fiona Kennan, Matt Dowling and Megan Scott, supported by an 11-piece orchestra.

And while the show is about the audience, cast member Gemma Marchant said the performance crew were feeling equally as grateful to be a part of it.

“Opening week was wonderful, the feeling of being back in the theatre and performing has been something that’s hard to put into words,” she said.

“After such a long time of heartbreak, of having to cancel shows, this felt like spring coming after a very long winter.”

The 1920s-set musical is centred on ‘the man in the chair’, who leads a dreary life until he drops the needle on his favourite album, The Drowsy Chaperone.

What happens next could only be described as mayhem, a burst of life complete with starlets, gangsters, chorus girls and all things ‘Roaring 20s’.

“The audience feedback and response has been so positive and the opening night applause was probably a highlight, as we have not heard it in a while,” Ms Marchant said.

“We are excited to go into our last three shows and know the audience will have a blast too.”
