It’s not a clash, but a blend.
An abundance of artworks drawn from both the museum’s archives and recent acquisitions create the latest exhibition at Shepparton Art Museum, Stories from the SAM Collection.
Curated across thematic rooms, each section delves into different facets of the museum’s history and amplifies the works of both early and contemporary artists.
Visitors are invited on a journey through a generous selection of ceramics, past the First Nations art donated by Carrillo and Ziyin Gantner, and onward to beloved pieces such as John Perceval’s Delinquent Angel and Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori’s King Alfred’s Country.
Perhaps most striking for SAM regulars are the recent additions by artists such as Khadim Ali and David Noonan.
“The team have seized the opportunity to unearth some fascinating stories from the SAM collection,” SAM artistic director Danny Lacy said.
“This exhibition model embraces a new permanent format to present a greater diversity of artworks and artists.
“It allows our audience to gain a deeper, more holistic understanding of not only what artworks we’ve amassed in the collection over our 88-year history, but also how we are continuing to build on it.”
Mr Lacy said the collection represented a shared vision of the Shepparton community.
“We hope that visitors to the exhibition can take a sense of pride in what has been created,” he said.
Meanwhile, there has been a new addition to the SAM executive team, with Andrew Gooley stepping into the role of director of business.
This comes as part of a broader strategic vision by the SAM board to enhance the museum’s focus on artistic programming and business development.
“The board is committed to delivering on SAM’s vision to be recognised as Australia’s premier regional destination for arts and culture,” SAM board chair Stephen Merrylees said.
“As newly appointed joint directors, Danny Lacy and Andrew Gooley step into their respective positions with impressive experience and industry knowledge to lead the next phase of SAM’s continued growth.”
Stories from the SAM Collection is now open to the public in The People’s Gallery on Level 2 of Shepparton Art Museum, 530 Wyndham St, Shepparton.
An exhibition opening event is on Friday, October 18, to celebrate the local artists of SAM Open and the new season of museum exhibitions.
