Three drug drivers caught in Echuca in four hours

ECHUCA'S road police are alarmed after catching three drug drivers within four hours on Tuesday, May 11.

Senior Constable Paul Swan of Campaspe Highway Patrol said detecting three drug-affected drivers in one shift was bad enough, let alone a few hours.

‘‘It’s pretty disturbing,’’ he said.

The first was stopped along Cornelia Creek Rd at 10.26am.

A Tatura man, driving a Hyundai SUV towing a trailer, recorded positive readings for alcohol and drugs and was taken to Echuca Police Station for evidentiary tests.

He recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.069 and tested positive for methamphetamine and cannabis.

Checks also revealed the man, aged in his 40s, was disqualified from driving.

Just after 1pm, police pulled over an Echuca woman driving a Holden sedan on Sturt St.

The 38-year-old tested positive to methamphetamine.

Another woman, driving a Ford sedan, was pulled over on North St at 2.20pm.

The 43-year-old tested positive to methamphetamine and cannabis.

All drivers will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

Snr Constable Swan said many motorists didn’t understand how dangerous it was to drive with drugs in their system.

‘‘Obviously it affects their ability to drive and concentrate on the risks of the road, as their reaction times are diminished,’’ he said.
