Factual or fictional, Goulburn Valley residents are being encouraged to put pen to paper and enter the Furphy Literary Awards.

The awards are a partnership between the Furphy Foundation, Greater Shepparton City Council, Latrobe University and Goulburn Valley Libraries.

Established in 1992, the literary awards promote and extend the tradition of storytelling, both factual and fictional of Australian culture.

The Furphy Literary Award applications for 2022 are now open with junior, youth and open categories for short stories and poetry.

Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said the awards are a great opportunity to recognise the potential and talent of young writers across the region.

“The Furphy Literary Award is an incredible opportunity for our youth to express their voices through literature and gain experience in writing short stories and poetry,” she said.

"We look forward to seeing many great collections of work from our community.

“We encourage as many young writers to submit an entry and share their unique story. After all, everyone can write at least one good story.”

Each category will have a first place prize of $300, followed by second $100 and third $50.

Entries close on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at 11.59pm. For information on the awards and to enter, visit www.furphyliteraryaward.com.au/junioryouth
