Toc duo training for Japan tournament

Lynne George spoke of her early travels and career as gueast speaker at the Tocumwal Optimists meeting.

Club Tocumwal’s teaching pro James McMaster and regular golfer Reuben Haley have been hard at work, training to take on the Speedgolf challenge at the Speedgolf World Championships.

Speedgolf is the same as your regular game, just quite a bit faster where competitors dash around the course in this rapidly growing sport.

The competition consists of multiple rounds of golf in a matter of hours making for a very long, but speedy, day on the course.

James is currently ranked first in Australia and ninth in the world of Speedgolf with players across 14 countries represented at this year’s World Championships.

The Speedgolf Worlds are being held at the 700 Club in Tochigi, Japan from November 13 to 15, 2024.

James and Reuben will be competing in both the individual and team’s events with the aim to bring home the trophy for Australia and Tocumwal.

Club Tocumwal is organising some fundraising for James and Reuben's trip to Japan.

As the sport is young there are limited opportunities for funding and sponsorship to help cover the costs of competing.

Lynne George from Tocumwal Antiques and Tearooms was guest speaker for the August Tocumwal Optimists meeting and kept all in attendance entertained with her life story.

Born in Tocumwal, Lynne spent her early school years here, before heading off to Melbourne as a boarding student. Graduating from a secretarial course, Lynne acquired her first job in Melbourne.

At age 21, Lynne travelled overseas alone to the USA.

She recalled her adventures, encounters and amazing experiences - including eating squirrel.

In 1987, Lynne started her ‘career’ at the Tocumwal Antiques and Tearooms, which she still operates to this day.

Lynne has contributed much to the Tocumwal community, including eight years as a councillor on the Berrigan Shire.

The Tocumwal Optimists thanked Lynne for the very interesting and entertaining insight into her life.
