Tocumwal water tower beautification project

Council has begun a revegetation project surrounding the water tower.

Work has been undertaken on the beautification and protection of the site surrounding the Tocumwal Water Tower in Hennessy St.

After years of erosion and being an eyesore, this revegetation work has included stripping the tangles of bindis and reviving the soil surrounding the water tower.

Berrigan Shire Council’s operations manager sustainability, Vageesh Nonavinakere, said:

“Due to its elevation and fall, the topsoil has been washing off during storms.

“Therefore, we are protecting our asset by placing some mats with topsoil and planting native plants.

“This is also protecting our water tower and giving an improved aesthetic look to the area.”

It certainly looks much better thanks to the work of the Berrigan Shire Council.

There is still space left in the Dutch Thunder Wildlife Shelter’s first free Community Wildlife Information Session, which will be held in Tocumwal on Saturday, August 17.

The event will be held from 11am to 3pm in the Tocumwal Library meeting room.

This session has been made possible by the Strawberry Fields Community Grants program.

Dutch Thunder is hoping this will be the first of many such sessions.

Participants will learn how to recognise common native species, know when they need assistance or to come into care, and what to do to give them the best chance of recovery.

Dutch Thunder will discuss the risks involved in rescuing and transporting injured wildlife, and how to safely assess and contain an animal without inducing further stress or trauma.

These sessions are designed to engage community members in wildlife rescue by providing some basic knowledge and skills needed to start helping with native animal rescue and emergency transport to a nominated vet or wildlife shelter.

As a 'Community Wildlife Rescue Volunteer' you will give the animal the best chance of survival.

Though this is a free session, there is a booking fee of $10 which will be refunded once you attend on the day.

This is to ensure that resources and catering are not wasted.

To book your spot in this amazing program, email Kylee at dutchtthunderwildlife@gmail.com or call 0417 560 910 for further information.

Please note that participants must be aged 16 years and older.
